There are various elements that do not allow data transfer rates to reach maximum bandwidths in theory:

The Key Causes of Internet Speed Difference

The reasons for the gap between potential and actual speed include the following factors:

  • Bandwidth as Potential: It is possible to have an internet plan with the bandwidth equal to 1 Gbps, which means that this is the highest pipe size provided by the connection.
  • Data Transfer Rate as Reality: For example, during peak activity time, high congestion on the network can result in the reduction of data transfer rate to 600 Mbps.
  • Hardware Problems: Old routers, outdated network cards, or unprotected cables will be unable to deal with such high bandwidth, leading to reduced transfer rate.

Conclusion

Although bandwidth and data transfer rate are used interchangeably in informal communication, the truth is that these terms refer to different stages of the data movement process.
