How Has Technology Changed the Classroom?

A classroom in 2004 looked very different to a classroom in 2024. Back in the day when I was a child, there were hardly any other electronic devices other than lights, fans, and security cameras. However, over the last two decades, new technologies have gradually been introduced into the education system, turning our schools into more dynamic, modern learning environments. 

Now when I visit my younger sibling’s parents and teachers meetings, all I see are different tech pieces for different kinds of learning. So how has technology managed this, and what kind of digital tools are teachers using to prepare students for a world deeply rooted in technology and innovation?

Access to Online Resources

One of the most significant ways technology has changed the classroom is by opening up vast libraries of information, making resources and learning materials far more accessible. At one point in time, teachers would be limited to textbooks to guide their students’ learning. 

But with the rise of the internet, students can now access millions of articles, videos, academic journals, and interactive resources at the simple click of a button.

Online Games for Learning

Speaking of interactive resources, another way in which teachers are using technology is to find more engaging ways for children to learn. In 2024, nearly one million teachers use Prodigy – an RPG that helps students master math standards – and have experienced huge engagement growth as a result. 

Students have reported an average of twice the level of math enjoyment, with many elevating two to three grade levels, and that’s all down to the game’s immersive approach, where math challenges are transformed into fun, game-based adventures. 

Rise in Digital Learning Tools

Another way tech has transformed the classroom is through the development of digital learning tools, including interactive whiteboards. Over the last decade, ‘smartboards’ have become far more commonplace, replacing traditional chalkboards with a more dynamic, multimedia display that ensures learning is more engaging and versatile. 

Data Tracking

Tracking data is another key area that teachers are taking advantage of. With the help of educational technologies – including tools like Google Classroom, Seesaw, and LMS – teachers can now collect real-time data on student performance, using it to adapt their lessons and meet the diverse needs of each student. 

For example, if a student is consistently scoring low in a particular area of math, the teacher can identify the gap and offer additional support or practice, either through targeted activities or by recommending specific resources. This data-driven approach can then allow for more effective, personalized teaching, ensuring that each student is attended to appropriately.

Virtual Reality

Lastly, while virtual and augmented reality are at the very beginning of their implementation into the education system, we’ll likely be seeing more of this tech in the future. With VR, there are numerous possibilities to expand a student’s horizon. With the ability to explore historical sites, outer space, or even human anatomy in ways that were previously impossible, this technology promises to enhance every subject and bring lessons to life. 

Students studying ancient civilizations can virtually walk through the streets of Rome, or visit the Pyramids of Egypt. Or they can explore distant planets, moons, and stars. When the technology improves and its implementation becomes more widespread, the possibilities of what students can learn – and how they learn it – are truly endless.
