Xbox Next-Gen: Surprise Launch Closer Than Anticipated

|Updated at March 06, 2025

While the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S may feel like they have just launched, discussions about Microsoft’s next-generation console are already swirling, giving some fans the jitters.

Even though no announcements were made, it has been reported that Microsoft was on the verge of building the next home console only five years after the Xbox Series X/S launch.

next gen Xbox development could come till 2027 2028

With both the PlayStation 5 and the newly launched PlayStation 5 Pro making waves with some success, Sony reportedly is also looking into a PlayStation 6. Therefore it looks like Microsoft wants to keep up.

Most of the buzz has been provided by insider and leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead, who claims that their sources from Microsoft and Intel have suggested some friction between the two.

One of his sources in Intel reportedly said, “Dude, Microsoft just f***ed us. I guess now we know that their ‘letters of intent’ mean absolutely nothing. I have no idea if AMD got the contract back, but this left a bad taste in my mouth…and from what I hear we aren’t the only company annoyed by the games they’re playing lately.”

In reply, a source from Microsoft contacted Moore’s Law and frankly said, “I honestly have no idea what’s going on with management here anymore. We are at least a year behind Sony in SoC development by now, and it almost seems like upper management’s seen some metric that’s making them doubt our ability to compete with another generation.”Another Microsoft insider shared, “I do believe we are going to launch another generation of Xbox, but the level of uncertainty is very telling… Oh, and by the way—the earliest we can do a proper next-gen would be 2027, and anything before that would either be a ‘new kind of Xbox’ or absurdly rushed.”
