In a world that is overflowing with cutting-edge security features, often centered around AI innovations. It is a breath of fresh air to encounter something that stands out on its own by introducing the Google Pixel 9 smartphone’s ability to screen fingerprints even when the display is off.
While facial recognition has taken the lead in smartphone security and convenience which makes traditional fingerprint scanning look a bit outdated. However, a lot of users still use fingerprint scanners on several Android devices which proves this method is far from obsolete.
Moreover, the biometric technology available to Google Pixel 9 users is anything but antiquated and it features an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Most of the tech experts agree that this sensor is more precise than the older optical fingerprint sensor which is found in Pixel 8 models and it is also faster. The speed is relevant following the recent news of an update as Google has released a second Android 16 developers preview on the 18th of December.
Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority, through his keen observations, has bought the major enhancements to the under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for Pixel 9 users.
Rahmaan was the first person to notice that, unlike previous Pixel biometric features, the latest update allows the users to activate the fingerprint scanner easily, without the need to wake up the screen.
He reported, “I discovered a new setting called Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock under Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. Its description says that you can use Fingerprint Unlock even when the screen is off.”Usability and security normally go hand in hand and anything that can help this, even if it is as simple as fingerprint scanning being a little bit quicker, as it can be a bit less bothersome. It is only expected that Google does not take long for this update to become a reality for all users.
